Utheemu Ganduvaru is an extremely special cultural site in the Maldives. It is the birthplace and home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, one of the most revered heroes in Maldivian history.

Be ready to be fascinated by the 500-year-old wooden interiors, including swing beds, lamps that burn coconut palm oil and elaborate wooden carvings.

Mohamed Thakurufaanu, and his brothers fought the Portuguese for eight years. Eventually they landed in Male’ and defeated the Portuguese leadership in the capital. Free from the shackles of the Portuguese, the people chose Mohamed Thukurufaanu as the Sultan.
