Visit Maldives and Qatar Airways have formed strategic cooperation to boost international tourism to the tropical island nation. Despite the various hurdles, the arrangement brings together an airline and a location that have been leaders in offering safe, reliable, and enjoyable travel experiences throughout the pandemic. On July 1, 2021, Qatar Airways increased operations to four daily flights, less than a year after being the first international airline to resume daily flights to the Maldives.
As evidenced by our airline being the first to begin international service and our rapid expansion of flights from daily to four days in less than a year, the Maldives has always been a strategically significant destination in our network. This collaboration with Visit Maldives is a logical next step in fulfilling both of our organizations' long-term goals for this route, and we look forward to working closely with Visit Maldives to help the Maldives develop its international tourism.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker
The Maldives has been regarded as a key tourism success story during the pandemic since reopening its doors to international travelers on July 15, 2020. The Maldivian tourist industry is on its way to regaining pre-pandemic levels of arrivals, with over one million visitors.
The Maldives' borders were reopened, and tourism was resumed, thanks to Qatar Airways' presence. The arrival of Qatar Airways flight QR672 with 129 passengers from Doha to Male on July 15, 2020, marked a new beginning for both the carrier and the Maldives. Since then, the number of flights and their frequency have increased. We appreciate Qatar Airways' assistance and involvement in the Maldives tourism resurgence as one of the top three passenger carriers to the Maldives.
Qatar Airways is sending a strong message to the globe with the addition of these new Maldives frequencies, a commitment that they will be there when the borders and gates open. We're relieved they've arrived in the Maldives. Thank you, Qatar Airways, for being a key partner in the Maldives' tourism success story.
Maldives’ Minister of Tourism, Hon. Dr. Abdulla Mausoom.
After the country's lockdown phase ended, the Maldivian tourism industry has continued to grow day by day. Middle Eastern visitors were among the first to arrive following the lockout, and their numbers are growing. The Maldives tourism industry's success can be ascribed to the island's natural socially-distanced location, as well as the enormous effort put in by all key industries in the Maldives.
