The Japanese architect Yuji Yamazaki created the Kagi Maldives Spa island. The COVID-19 disaster forced the 50-villa boutique island resort to postpone its inauguration. In the Maldives' north-eastern archipelago, the resort is located in the North Male Atoll. The same architect who constructed Tokyo's Narayama Beach resort developed the three-hectare island wellness resort. Since November of 2013, the spa island has been open.
The Baani Spa, the first-of-its-kind spa in this region of the world, is a trademark building for Kagi. Treatment rooms, saunas, a salon, a bar, and a wellness boutique are all available at the spa. Kagi has welcomed visitors from over 50 different countries, with Russian tourists ranking second. The water has a strong influence, as Baani means 'ocean swell' in the local tongue, reminding one of life's rhythm. "Baani's metaphorical significance is a personal journey to healthy and cheerful living," Ahmed explains.
The resort had been planned before to COVID, but it had to open its doors after the epidemic had already changed the norms of free interaction. Kagi has two architectural hubs on the island: a spa complex to the south and a restaurant complex to the north. These public buildings are meant to provide visitors plenty of open space and encourage both socializing and privacy without isolating them. All of the villas feature their own private plunge pool, allowing visitors to spend their days away from the main areas if they so desire.
