The island archipelago attracted 722,253 visitors in 2019. Arrivals have decreased by 39% from the previous year, according to the data. From the 27th of March to the 15th of July 2020, the island nation's borders were closed.

About 1.5 million visitors are expected to visit the Maldives this year. The Maldives' GDP will rise by 17.1% in 2021 and 11.5 percent in 2022, according to the World Bank. According to industry analysts, the Maldives is forecast to receive at least 1.2 million tourists in 2021. Without India, the island nation's tourism sector will be incomplete.
