A study on the effect of global events on Maldives tourism was released by the think tank Baani Centre for International Policy, which is situated in the Maldives. The paper looks at how Maldivian tourism responded to China's decision to restrict its international border during the epidemic, which caused a sharp decline in Chinese visitors to the Maldives.
China had previously been the Maldives' largest tourist market in terms of volume. 284,000 Chinese nationals traveled there in 2019. As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and China's border closure, there were only 34,000 Chinese visitors to the Maldives in 2020. The Baani Centre for International Policy research cites Maldives' acceptance of Uyghur terrorists from Guantanamo Bay and Maldivian criticism of China at COP15. Chinese officials made it clear that more Chinese visitors were coming to the Maldives than ever before. A report reveals a surprisingly healthy tourism industry, as well as responsive public policies and a vibrant economy.
